Coaching

The sea has made me a better coach

the-sea-is-my-muse

The sea has made me a better coach.

The sea is another coach of mine!

The sea is my muse!

Seeing this beauty every single day… inspires me to do good, to serve my people, to do work that matters, to live every day intensely.

I transact with the sea every single day in my life now.

And you know what?

All transactions with this beauty are credit ones!

The sea credits me with inspiration.

I take this inspiration and I give it to my clients.

I am only … the middle man! 🙂

Think about it…

If something as beautiful as this exists, my clients’ life can get as beautiful as this!

Everything is possible for them to create … just like … this beautiful creation itself!

To be precise, this is how it works…

When I see this beauty, I’m confident enough to convince my clients that their life is as beautiful!

NOW! Today! Right now! Without them changing anything!

And when they realise that…

When they see that beauty themselves…

The beauty that they couldn’t see before…

They are ready to make their lives even more beautiful, ie. achieve whatever change they want in their lives…

Sometimes (even better) they realise they don’t’ have to change anything…

They just couldn’t see that beauty…

They couldn’t see the sea inside them…

An unusual letter of recommendation for my client and teacher Luke

angelos-luke-coaching

I almost cried while writing this recommendation letter for my client.

What do you do when you’re asked to write a recommendation letter for someone?

You go to Google, download a template and start working with it.

That was my immediate reaction when I was asked to write a letter for Lucas who was applying for a teaching job abroad.

But then I thought…

Do I need a template to write about Lucas?

Is there a template out there any close to the journey we’ve been on together with Lucas, our marathon coaching conversations, his achievements, his attitude to life, the dreams and the vision he has for himself and the world?

Why another letter with the usual “I strongly recommend Lucas for this position without any reservation” BS?

I’ll write a few words from my heart, I thought.

But … is it worth it? Most likely they will not read my letter with the same attention and care that I’m planning to write it.

You don’t know… They may pay attention, they may not, but…

Lucas will certainly read my letter carefully. Isn’t that enough for me?

I’m writing this letter for Lucas!

And I did.

And writing this letter was one of the most heartfelt things I’ve done in my life.

It wasn’t another transactional document that would soon get lost in an email server somewhere.

For Lucas, this letter was one of those old ink-and-paper letters that one keeps in a safe drawer for life.

I treated this letter as some more work with Lucas, a form of encouragement for him to keep creating for himself and others.

Isn’t it fascinating when you see everything you do as a gift to someone, an opportunity to be of service to someone?

And then, an “admin” black-and-white task, such as that of writing another recommendation letter, becomes work of art, a gift of appreciation, an inner introspection, a joyful and healing activity for yourself.

Let’s write a few words for Lucas then!

File → New → Document.

My Letter for Lucas

Dear Ms. Smith,

This will probably not look like the typical recommendation letter.

My name is Angelos and I’ve worked with Lucas as his life and career coach for the last year.

I’ll tell you why I would hire Lucas based on my own criteria (not necessarily the right ones) of who is a good teacher or who could be a great teacher.

Having worked with professional teachers, three things stand out to me when it comes to a teacher’s success.

#1: Being a teacher but also a student. How can you teach someone anything when you’re not a student yourself? When I say student, I mean, a lifelong student.

How can a teacher understand a student’s struggles with learning a foreign language if the teacher hasn’t learned a foreign language himself or herself?

Lucas speaks Russian very well and I can confirm that because I am fluent in Russian. If I were to learn English, I would have more respect for a native English teacher who speaks other foreign languages. This is definitely not a rule, but this shows something, don’t you think?

Lucas’s decision to hire a coach like me shows his commitment to self-growth. He’s invested in his own personal and professional development. I’d definitely trust a teacher who goes to seminars, classes and engages in relationships in which they are the students, wouldn’t you?

#2: Teach, teach, teach! No one can become a great teacher by reading books and attending a course on how to teach. A teacher gets better by teaching people.

Throughout this year, I’ve challenged Lucas to teach as much as possible. He got creative, he joined websites and communities where English learners hang out, he offered his time to students, he made mistakes, he went through all the “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do here”, he found ways to motivate his students, he gathered interesting materials, he worked with students of different age, background and needs and … became a great teacher.

#3: Love for your students. In my humble opinion, this is the element that makes a teacher stand out and … not only a teacher. I should have probably started with this point. This is what makes the students gather around a teacher when the class has finished because they just can’t get enough of the teacher’s love. This is what makes the students dream. This is what makes the students want to pass that love on to their work and others.

Lucas has an immense love for his students. Teaching for him is an act of love. That love goes further than teaching the conditionals or the passive voice to his students. He’s not just a teacher; he’s another coach for his students! He’s there to inspire them, to motivate them, to fight against their fears and limiting beliefs. He’s there to love them enough so they may learn and grow!

Because think about it… Today all the information is there available for free for those who want to learn English or anything. What a student needs in our days is inspiration, motivation, and … love.

Lucas has inspired me in our coaching relationship. He inspires me every day by showing how much he cares about his students. He inspires me when he goes deep into the “why” of his students, i.e. “Why learning English is that important to you?” He’s not there only to correct their grammar mistakes. He’s there to hold their vision, as the English language is a tool that opens new horizons for his students.

The person that is writing this letter used to work as a foreign language teacher in Russia. He speaks four languages and has a passion for language learning. He happens to come from a family of teachers and has so much love for this profession. While I’m writing these words, Ms. Smith, honestly, I’m getting emotional.

For me, it’s been a privilege to work with Lucas and help him on his journey of becoming a better teacher but also a better person.

Forgive me if I sounded any didactic in this letter. It was not my intention. You could be a mentor for me. I just shared my little experience with you and why I would hire Lucas if I were you. It’s the deep respect I have for this man and what he wants to create for himself and his students.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

With love for the teaching profession,

Angelos Georgakis

My client surpassed me!

my-client-surpassed-me

I want to share my win with you…

A moment of breakthrough…

A moment where one of my clients has achieved something that I have yet to do myself!

I have been working with her for some time. She is dedicated, inspiring and growing like crazy.

She had changed her vision and decided to pursue her business as a coach.

I was supporting her through the process and helping her through the resistance and roadblocks that came her way.

And then it happened, it came out of the blue, with no heads up she told me what happened.

She had her first client offer to pay her almost DOUBLE what she had been charged by me for our coaching!

My client ROI is scheduled to almost double and she is a single client.

How incredible is this?!

I had to celebrate and realized that I had been apart of something that I myself had not yet achieved.

This instance is wonderful and I am so proud and find myself renewed by her victory.

I literally went mental yesterday! I was jumping and shouting during the coaching session with my client!

It took me a few minutes to come to my senses and continue our session!

I’m a happy man. You guys make me happy. You inspire me.

I don’t have clients. I have a very big family. My people are my family. Our work creates an amazing bonding between us. It’s the most wonderful feeling of all feelings.

I don’t remember celebrating my own victories the same way I celebrate the victories of my people.

But I know its my own victory too.

My victory is their victory.

What a great thing in life, isn’t it?

To be able to partner with someone and see them succeed.

I have yet to experience something more powerful than that…

Love, Angelos

6am in the morning watching again the session with my coach

angelos-early-in-the-morning-in-the-office

6am in the office this morning…

Watching the recorded coaching session with my own coach…

In my jacket because it was super cold when I arrived…

I watched the recorded session twice. One for information and one for transformation as I like to say.

And I may listen to it again because when you pay hundreds of dollars for an hour of coaching, you value it, you learn, and most importantly, you take action!

I spent more than 2 hours watching our session.

Three Moleskine diaries on my desk.

I took a bunch of notes. So many lessons!

I then messaged my coach to say thank you again for her time and presence during our session. For me, that’s more important than the money I paid.

And then I closed my eyes and visualised people who would benefit from these notes.

I reached out to them. Passed the love to them.

I have my clients in my thoughts between our sessions.

I bring them to my mind and I meditate on their projects.

I enjoy working along with them, even when I’m not coaching them.

I borrowed that from my coaches.

Isn’t that amazing by the way?

This is a chain of service!

My coach, myself and my clients.

Each one passing love and wisdom to each other.

How to get what you want in life…

angelos-taking-notes-at-home
My biggest realisation on getting what you want in life.
If you want something in life, ie. a thing, it seems like universally it works out if it’s not coming from a feeling of deficit, a feeling of desperateness, or a feeling of need.

When people are NOT coming from an insecure feeling, they will often have an idea of what they want in life and they will move towards it!
They move towards it successfully when they don’t have a negative feeling or an insecure feeling.
They move towards it when it doesn’t matter one way or another.
They move towards it when the thing is just … a delight, a game, a dessert! 🍰
“Mmm… what about that? Why not? Mmm… It’s going to be fun! Ha! That’d be nice! Let’s play! “
Then you can feel it’s easy to move towards the thing because it just doesn’t matter! There is no attachment! There is no neediness!
The insecure feeling of attachment just stops acquisition! It makes the whole thing sticky, it just doesn’t happen! The whole thing just doesn’t move! There is friction. There is loss of energy. There is no room for creativity. Arrrghh!!!!
It’s easy to get what you want if you see what you want as the frosting rather than the cake!

She is all that … and also confident.

she-is-also-confident

She said: “I have to build my confidence. That’s what keeps me down.”

I replied: “No, it’s not. Who cares about confidence!!!”

I recently became friends with a wonderful person. I’ll call her Felicia.

She didn’t reach out to me. I reached out to her after exchanging a couple of emails through work.

And I did because I felt that person had so much value.

I wanted Felicia to be in my network (or better say, myself to be in her network!) and possibly become friends one day.

As we were chatting, Felicia told me she had recently started exploring new avenues in her life but there had always been something stopping her – her lack of confidence.

She seemed to believe that she had to do a great deal of work on building her confidence.

This is what I wrote to her and the reason I’m making my answer public is that I’ve been getting this “I lack confidence” type of thing a lot lately from the most capable, wonderful, amazing, exceptional, and worthy women.

I hope Felicia (not her real name) wouldn’t mind I’m making this public. I believe it’s my duty to share this with everyone here.

This is my reply to Felicia word by word.

My reply to Felicia

Felicia, I read your message very carefully and a few things stood out to me…

For now, I only want to focus only on one thing that’s important to me and this is probably some feedback for you from the outside world as your confidence has to do only with your inner world.

You’re saying that “it’s difficult to know you via a message or any dealing we had with work” but the fascinating thing is that I did manage to understand and feel who you really are… via 3-4 “transactional” work emails.

I did see your value as a person, your genuine commitment to serving others, your kindness and your worth!

And that’s why I rushed to find you here on FB because I thought… this person has WORTH, I should connect with Felicia! And not just connect but really get to know Felicia! That’s why I messaged you right after you accepted my friend request.

As you said, confidence goes up and down and I don’t think that you will ever get to a point when you’ll always feel confident.

So, if confidence is a volatile asset, why don’t you invest into who you really are, and see that investment grow as you navigate life?

Because I know you will always be kind and helpful to others, professional, caring and all these good things that you are. That’s the most valuable asset you have and will never change!

And if one day someone says: “Ohh Felicia is all that but she lacks confidence”, I’d say “That’s a psychopath!!! Felicia, please stay away from them!”

And if you said to me, I like all that, Angelos, it makes sense, but I still want to show up “confident”…

Well, when you stop thinking too much about that confidence thing… you end up showing more confident… if that’s what you want, if that matters…

Felicia, I think you’re focusing too much on this confidence thing, it’s not real, to be honest, you have immense value and I don’t have to put you under a microscope to confirm that.

It’s just fine being you, and if you’re YOU, you’re also confident… but who cares?

You don’t have to prove your confidence to anyone… including yourself.

You appeared very confident to me by the way! And you’re sharing your “lack of confidence” with me, someone you barely know. That’s really “confident” of yours, Felicia!

But still… I never thought I had to measure your confidence… I only wanted to connect with you because of who you were, not how confident you were.

I don’t think there is much work that needs to be done here with you! What do you think?

Why don’t you turn your focus on what you want to do in your life rather than creating an inexistent problem and then trying to fix it?

As a coach, I’d refuse to work with you on building your confidence! Haha!

I’d say, OK, Felicia, is there anything else here? What do you want to create today?

Let’s have fun, let’s create something beautiful today and at the end of the day, I guarantee you’ll certainly feel fulfilled, happy, accomplished and … oh yes, that one too… confident!

But who cares… at the end of the day, you wouldn’t care either…

~ To all women who became confident by being them and are now on a mission to empower other women to do so.

Moving towards happiness VS Running away from unhappiness

angelos-lefkada-skarous

My Client: Angelos, my goal is to lose weight.

Me: No, your goal is not to lose weight. As far as I know you, your goal here is to be fit, eat healthy, fresh, delicious food, feel good, more energised, stronger, happier. What are you going to do then?

My Client: I’ll do 100 squats today, I’ll go running tomorrow, I’ll get some healthy stuff and put them in the fridge for when I feel like having a snack! Yea… I now get what you mean! I’m excited!

I’m always here to remind my people that we’re not running away from anything. We’re not fixing anything here. We’re not solving problems.

We’re not running away from excessive weight, drinking, a boss who’s driving us nuts, a job we hate.

Working on fixing a problem blocks your creativity. It makes you go round something that needs to be fixed. Something that shouldn’t be there in the first place. Until it’s fixed, you are frustrated!
OK, I’ve fixed myself now! I can go on with my life and start creating again, right?

– I have created something amazing in my life. It feels wonderful! – Oh really? But you had some issue that you wanted to fix, no? – What issue? What do you mean?

In this group, we are CREATORS. We’re creating something that’s 100 times bigger, more exciting, more valuable than just solving a problem or “fixing” ourselves.

What we’re moving towards is so big that will exterminate all the “problems” we thought we had to fix. If there’s something bothering us, it will disappear because of what we will create!

My goal is to help 100 people create the impossible this year, craft their dream career, build a business, create what they’ve always been postponing, something beautiful for themselves and the world!

I’m moving towards that vision every single day! This vision is driving me like anything else! My “self” is not there in that vision! The more I lose myself in the service of my people, the more I find myself! Remember the quote by Mahatma Gandhi?

I do have a personal goal too. Yes, I do. I want to build a big beautiful house near the sea. And then invite all those 100 people to my house, to hug each one of them for a few seconds, to celebrate with them, to swim with them, to have dinner together, to sing and play the guitar on the beach around the fire.

My dear friends, what do you want to move towards?

With fierce loving,
Angelos

Making everything to work in your favour

Robert used to have a successful Internet business.

But because of his drinking addiction 🍷, his business went down. He almost lost all his clients.

After two years of constant struggle, Robert managed to win the battle against alcohol.

But the problem now is that he needs to start all over again and find new clients for his business.

At least this is what he thought.

This is what I wrote to him: “Why don’t you contact those clients that you think ‘you’ve lost forever’ because of your addiction?

I’d be honest with them, share my story and ask for a second chance. I would give them the whole truth about myself as if they were my best friends.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they started asking you about how you managed to go sober rather than the work you do! You may be able to help them too!

A few days later Robert closed $2.5K in business from those old contact he thought he had “lost forever”. ☺️

Getting creative and loving the unlovable!

What if you learned to love the things that you always thought were unlovable?

Just got off the phone with a very successful and capable advocate lawyer.

She said to me this profession is not easy. I’m sure it’s not!

She also said that the law she practices in her country is based on counterarguments.

Her work is all about defending her clients against any counterargument that the opposition will come up with.

That sounds stressful at first sight, doesn’t it?

You want to protect your clients and yourself against these counterarguments.

An advocate’s success, reputation, and career all seem to be perfectly correlated with fighting back counterarguments.

But, think about it.

What if one managed to love a counterargument when they were served one?

What if one saw the counterargument as a way to come up with a creative counterargument themselves?

What if a counterargument were always the way to the truth and a healthy system of justice?

What if one got inspired and loved the person who comes up with a strong counterargument?

We stayed a little longer at that last question.

Can someone “love” the advocate of the opposition?

My knowledge in law is so little. Excuse me for my ignorance and, please, if you know more help me see clearly.

The person who comes up with a counterargument is another person who’s trying to do their job as well as they can. They are like you!

But the more I’m thinking about it, the more I feel this goes further than law!

When you get to love the counterarguments of the opposition, you get to love the game, you’re in flow, you’re in love with the process.

There is no ego, there is no expectation.

This is the question that comes to mind now:

Can you get inspired by what you thought was your enemy?

Tell me what you hear.

With love,

Angelos

You don’t ever have to go out of your comfort zone…

You don’t have to go outside your comfort zone!! 😕

I visited my physiotherapist the other day.

A physiotherapist keeps applying pressure on the muscle in pain and stops when it gets uncomfortable for you.

If they feel it’s just a little too much, they will back off immediately!

They must back off otherwise they’re doing more harm than good!

Then they wait until the pain goes away and they apply a little bit more pressure.

Again, as much as you can take.

Practising this again and again makes the muscle less tense, the blood circulation is increased in the affected area, they can wron deeper and deeper and slowly, the pain goes away.

A psychotherapist operates entirely within your comfort zone throughout the whole process.

The same with yoga.

Your yoga instructor says that if it’s too much of a stretch, relax, stay there, breathe out, then move into the pose a little bit more if you can. Otherwise stay there.

And when you go back next time all of sudden you see that you can stretch more and more!

You can grow by operating totally within your comfort zone.

When I work with people I look to get results while they operate within their comfort zone.

And when we do that we see that their comfort zone expands!

Walking 500 steps or going around the block is progress for someone who only moves from the kitchen to the bathroom.

If you don’t want to do video, you can write articles and still build phenomenal awareness for your business.

If you’re an introvert, you can still build a successful coaching business without going to every meetup event in your area.

I’m not saying don’t try stuff that challenges you, I’m not saying don’t face your fears, I’m not saying don’t do the extra mile.

All I’m saying is if going outside your comfort zone never worked for you, you can still have results by operating within your comfort zone.

And see your comfort zone expand gradually.

All it takes is creativity and full exploration of your comfort zone!
